1973 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe
Chevrolet introduced the Camaro on June 28th, 1966, began making them in August, and by September, the first cars were delivered to the public. Ever since then, every Camaro ever built has had a singular goal: beat the Mustang. It's the most intense and enduring automotive rivalry in America, and arguably the world.
Born originally a mild mannered Camaro coupe, we now have a Z28 badged car, mostly correct on the exterior for 1973, with a snappy interior, new dash front and gauges, Hurst shifter, and Ridler wheels, let's go eat some Mustangs for lunch!
Exterior
With all its steel panels bathed in white, a split front bumper with a custom grille in the center, now with horizontal stainless steel bars, Z28 badge and single headlight flanking on either side, it is similar to the original but now sports a chin spoiler in white. A pinned hood with a large rear facing scoop backs up to a windshield trimmed in black. The chin spoiler meets the original bodywork at the front of the wheel wells, and these frame 17-inch Ridler wheels which are wrapped by 225/45ZR17 tires. Moving to the back, long wide doors have nicely minded gaps, and more black trimmings for the glass in them. The long gracefully sloping rear glass and deck has another rear spoiler attached, and the bowtie round taillights framed by a nearly perfect condition bumper below. Dual wide gray stripes are racing rearward from the hood, skip the roof, then continue on over the trunk lid and rear spoiler, ending at the rear panel where the tail lighting is. In back, 18-inch Ridler wheels are wrapped by larger 275/45R18's. Some lowering springs upfront and this car has an aggressive stance. See you at the tree!
Interior
Black vinyl shows nicely covering the door panels, and all is looking great on the doors, with shiny handles and a bar actuator buried in the door. Slipping inside we note the dash has been given the once over, and now sports round black bezel white face gauges with black lettering and numbering. The speedometer has a white digital LED readout for the mileage. The dash front is now a black textured panel and is within the black vinyl padded dash surround. Extra gauges have been added as well as a tachometer and a few original pulls and knobs. In the center is a Pioneer AM/FM/CD player and the Hurst floor shifter just below. White vinyl buckets, nice and clean are now in front, and in back a 2 plus 2 bench with a black carpeted hump running through the seat portion of this bench. More black carpeting is flooding all the floor space, and up top is a slightly crinkled headliner in black. A wood rimmed steering wheel with 3 chromed supports in the center and a blue bowtie badge in the horn area shows off nicely.
Drivetrain
Peering under the hood we note a non original 305ci V8 is taking up residence. A single 4 barrel Edelbrock carb mixes the fossils and air, and throws them down to an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold. 4 speeds for the Muncie manual transmission is attached to the back of the mill. A 10-bolt 3.73 rear is present. All is well under the hood and looking great! Headers, valve coverings and a chromed air cleaner cover add to the drama.
Undercarriage
The underside is mostly rust free save for some minor surface rust. Frame is showing some rust damage, some invasive, and repairs on back sections on both sides. The floor pans are clean, and rockers are showing no rust whatsoever. Independent coil spring front suspension, and leaf spring with what appear to be new mounting plates are on back. Power disc brakes upfront and power drums on the rear. Consignor states new bearings for front and back wheels and new wheel cylinders on back. All this mixes with a turbo Muffler and 2-1/2 inch exhaust piping.
Drive-Ability
This mill lit right up, sounded great, and had no problem taking off. The car cruised nicely, and was decent in the turns, although I feel it would be happier in a straight line. A street or strip car that has a comfortable interior.
A good example of the 1973 Camaro version, now labeled Z28. Nice job on the mill, now white vinyl interior, reworked dash and clean black carpeting.
