Description

British Army Artillery 1879 Sawback Sword Bayonet & Sheath,Martini Henry Rifle
Awesome and a little hard-to-find sword bayonet from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  The Martini-Henry rifle was in service from 1871 through 1918.  The sawtooth bayonets were considered to be so brutal that they were not made after WW1.
This bayonet is so long that it can be brandished as a sword if needed but it was designed to be a bayonet.  It is  in excellent condition for being more that 140 years old.  The leather sheath is very dry and is getting brittle.  It is complete though.
The wood handle is worn but not marred or scratched up.  Most of the checkering is still visible.
The blade is also in excellent condition.  There is some shallow pitting near the hilt but no rust.  The entire length of the blade is present.  It was never cut down or severely sharpened.  It is marked all over the place and we are only allowed to show 12 pictures with the listing.  We decided to take more pictures of the markings instead of the blade.
We will certainly take more pictures of the blade for anyone interested.
The sheath is all there but it is broken in two places.  There is already one professional and probably time period repair to the sheath.  However, the repair did not last over the years and the sheath separated at that repair joint.  The leather became so dry over the years that a second break is located closer to the end.  It has not broken completely through.  It just looks like a crack, so we took a picture of it from the side to show what we mean.
As we said, it is very well marked.  We have never seen markings by the locking system and we used up our 12 pictures before we could show the marking on the top by where the bayonet lug slides in.
More pictures can be provided upon request.  A chance to pick up the rifle comes up much more often than these bayonets do.
This would look fantastic mounted into a 3D frame, perhaps all acrylic with a little card next to it with a short story of it’s history.  The blade could be mounted and the leather sheath can lay on the bottom of the frame which would protect it better.
Would look even better mounted on the wall attached to the actual rifle it was used with.
** AFTER WE LISTED THIS, WE FOUND ANOTHER MARKING ON THE ACORN NUB (THE PIECE THAT HOLDS THE BAYONET IN A FROG).**
