    Description
The Buffington "Headless Shell Extractor and Gun Cleaner."  This is the second style of shell extractor furnished with the Trapdoor rifle and is referred to as the Model 1882.
The style shown here has a single line of serrations, or straight knurling, on the perimeter of the drift, the piece that screws into the small end when not in use.  It is one of about five styles of this same extractor.  We have a small number of a second style which has two lines of knurling on the drift.  The last photo shows the two types side by side.  See our other listings if you'd like one of the other style.
The extractors are in good to very good condition.  The photos are of five representative pieces that have been cleaned with solvent and toothbrush.  The one you receive will be dirty and probably greasy but will readily clean.  See photos 8,9, and 10 for examples of the uncleaned extractors.  None of the extractors are rusty or battered or beat-up.
Use one to remove a stuck case.  The War Department suggested that it could be used to clean the bore.  I'd stick with the usual bore brush on a cleaning rod.
