Description
M1878 Canvas HaversackOriginal US Army Model 1878 haversack, khaki canvas construction featuring main body with divider inside rear, two internal utensil pockets on each side, and front pocket with tin plated steel sunburst button. Main flap is well marked U.S. and has strap with brass tongue buckle closure. Brass rings on back for attaching shoulder sling--rings have been fitted with steel "S" hooks for use with the later M1903 type cartridge belts. Flap measures 13 x 12 1/4 inches, haversack body measures 9 x 11 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches. Average fading and moderate soiling as expected from a 120+ year old bag, but no holes, fraying, repairs or other damage. Has original owner's initials faintly written in several spots on main flap. No arsenal/manufacturer markings or dates visible.
This model was used during the latter years of the Indian campaigns and was the standard shoulder haversack of the Spanish-American War. It was superseded by the Model 1898 haversack [a slightly larger version], but as indicated by the steel hooks on back, continued in service into the early 20th century. Nice piece for any late Indian Wars or Spanish War display and is in very good condition. Any questions please feel free to ask.
