Description
HERE IS THE HOLY GRAIL OF THE US ARMY 1881 PATTERN DRESS HELMETS. IT IS ALL CORRECT AND ORIGINAL.ONLY AROUND 600 OF THESE INDIAN SCOUTS DRESS HELMET WERE EVER ORDERED BY THE QUARTER MASTER. THEY ARE SELDOM FOUND IN HEADGEAR COLLECTION. HERE IS A CHANCE TO HAVE A SUPERB AND REMARKABLE EXAMPLE IN YOUR COLLECTION.
THIS HELMET IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND IS CORRECT AND ORIGINAL WITH THE PROPER CROSSED ARROWS DEVICE. THE HELMET STAFF PLATE IS CORRECT. THE CORD IS NOT A REPRODUCTION AND IS VERY CLEAN AND BRIGHT. BEING WHITE THEY ARE USUALLY TURNING GREY. THIS ONE IS BRIGHT. I COULD ONLY FIND ONE SMALL FRAY ON THE CORD WHICH IS SHOWN UP CLOSE IN MY PICTURES. IT IS NOT FRAGILE TO HANDLE.
THE PLUME IS FULL AND QUITE LONG. IT IS WELL MATCHED TO THIS HELMET.
THIS IS ALSO A SELDOM FOUND LARGE SIZE FOR THE DAYS AT 7 1/8 AS SHOWN ON THE ISSUE TAG
THE HELMET WAS MANUFACTURED BY HORSTMANN IN PHILADELPHIA
AND IS SO MARKED INSIDE THE SWEATBAND AND DATED I THINK 1896 (HARD TO READ). THE LEATHER BAND IS ALSO STAMPED WITH US GOVERNMENT QUARTER MASTER DEPOT. VERY SHARP, LEGIBLE STAMP.
THE FELT IS SUPERB , JUST A LITTLE DUSTY.
THE INSIDE SWEAT BAND IS PRESENT AND IN SUPERB CONDITION.
THE SIDE BUTTONS ARE CORRECT WITH THE CROSSED ARROWS.
